How to Check Board Quality When Ordering

Not all chipboard is the same. How to tell a quality panel from a cheap one — by certification, smell, cross-section, and surface finish.

Why It Matters

Two panels can look identical but differ significantly in density, formaldehyde content, and surface durability. Furniture manufacturers don't always disclose exactly which board they use. A few simple checks will give you a much clearer picture before you sign anything.

1. Certification and Emission Class

The key safety parameter for chipboard is the formaldehyde emission class. Formaldehyde is released by the adhesive that binds the wood chips.

  • E0 / E0.5 — ultra-low emission; the standard for children's rooms and bedrooms; rare on the market
  • E1 — acceptable level for living spaces; this is the minimum you should insist on
  • E2 — non-residential use only; do not use in a home
  • The class must appear on the packaging or in the material documentation — ask the manufacturer
  • Reliable brands: Egger (Austria/Germany), Kronospan, Pfleiderer — consistently maintain E1

2. Smell

Freshly cut board always has some odour — that is normal. The guide:

  • Faint, slightly woody smell — normal for E1
  • Sharp chemical smell that doesn't clear in a few minutes — a sign of E2 or a production fault
  • The smell intensifies with warmth — check how a sample smells after a few hours in a heated room
  • A fresh cut smells stronger than the surface — smell the edge, not the face

3. Density and Weight

Density directly affects strength and screw-holding ability.

  • Standard chipboard density: 650–750 kg/m³
  • A good-quality 16 mm furniture panel should weigh around 12–13 kg/m²
  • Light as cardboard — a sign of voids or low density; screws won't hold reliably
  • Ask to weigh a sample, or lift a finished part: noticeable weight is a good sign

4. Surface Finish

  • The melamine film should be smooth and even — no bubbles, waves, or dull patches
  • The texture should be clear and readable: a good wood-effect decor shows pores and grain
  • Run a fingernail across the surface: quality film does not scratch
  • Gloss surfaces — check for uniform sheen under raking light
  • Small pitted dimples (orange-peel texture) on the surface — a sign of poor pressing

5. Cross-Section

The cut edge of a board reveals more about its internal structure than the surface does.

  • The structure should be uniform across the entire section — no large voids or clumps
  • Core colour should be consistent: grey-beige in standard board, greenish in moisture-resistant
  • Chip size should be fine and even — large, coarse chips indicate low density
  • The outer layer (top and bottom 1–2 mm) should visibly be finer than the core — this three-layer structure improves surface smoothness for lamination

6. Geometry

  • The panel must be flat — bow exceeding 2 mm per metre along the length is not acceptable
  • Thickness must be consistent at different points — check with a calliper or tape measure
  • For 16 mm board the tolerance is ±0.3 mm; more than 1 mm variance is a reject
  • Check squareness: the diagonals of the sheet must be equal

7. Edge Banding on Finished Parts

  • Edge banding must sit flush — no gaps, bubbles, or lifting
  • Thickness: 0.4 mm is the minimum for hidden surfaces; 1–2 mm for visible edges
  • The banding must match the panel decor in colour and texture
  • The banding-to-panel transition must be flush — no lips or adhesive overflow

The simplest check for a buyer: ask the manufacturer for the board's data sheet showing the brand, mill of origin, and emission class. If there is no document, the manufacturer either doesn't know or doesn't want to disclose what they're using.

What Not to Use as a Quality Signal

  • "Whiter" or "brighter" colour — this is a decor property, not a board quality indicator
  • "Imported board" with no specific brand name — could mean anything
  • Thickness alone: 18 mm of low-density board is worse than 16 mm of a dense one
  • Words like "eco" or "natural" without an E1/E0 mark — marketing, not certification
