The four main kitchen worktop types: postforming, HPL panel, acrylic solid surface, and quartz composite — construction, durability, care, and price.
Postforming
Moisture-resistant chipboard core (28 or 38 mm) laminated with HPL and rolled at the front edge. "Postforming" refers specifically to that rolled radius edge, not the material as a whole.
- Front edge is rounded — no sharp corner, no dirt trap
- Rear edge at the wall: square with an aluminium upstand profile
- Joints between sections are visible — cannot be hidden
- Vulnerability: the edge at the sink. Without quality silicone, water enters the chipboard and it swells
- Decors synchronised with chipboard — worktop and door fronts from the same collection
- Price: low
HPL panel (square edge)
The same construction — chipboard + HPL — but without the rolled front edge. The edge is square, finished with HPL banding or an aluminium profile. Sometimes called "compact" or "square profile".
- Cheaper than postforming — no edge-rolling step
- Square edge: banded with matching HPL or finished with a metal profile
- Used where the worktop meets another surface on both sides
- Same weak points at the sink and joints
- Price: lower than postforming
Compact HPL (solid sheet)
A solid HPL sheet 12–20 mm thick with no chipboard core. The material is homogeneous throughout — no vulnerable edges. Used in commercial interiors and premium kitchens.
- The edge is the same HPL — no banding needed
- Moisture-resistant through the full thickness — sink cutouts carry no swelling risk
- Narrower decor range than laminated postforming
- Heavier and more expensive than standard postforming
- Price: medium–above average
Acrylic solid surface
Cast polymer material: acrylic resin + mineral filler. Main brands — Corian (DuPont/Mitsubishi), Hi-Macs (LG), Staron (Samsung).
- Key advantage: seamless joints between sections — glued and sanded flush
- Integrated sink is possible — one continuous surface with no joint
- Scratches can be polished out on site with a machine
- Cannot take direct heat without a trivet — deforms above 180°C
- Requires regular care: neutral cleaners only, no abrasives
- Price: above average
Quartz composite
90–94% natural quartz bound with polymer resin, manufactured under high pressure. Brands: Silestone, Caesarstone, Compac, Quartzform.
- Harder than acrylic — better everyday scratch resistance
- Joints are visible — seamless bonding like acrylic is not possible
- More heat-tolerant than acrylic, but a thermal shock (red-hot pan) can crack it
- No sealing required, unlike natural stone
- Heavy — base cabinets must handle the load
- Price: high

Postforming is the right call on a tight budget — if the sink is sealed with silicone and water is not left standing on the edges. Acrylic and quartz are for situations where visible joints are unacceptable or long-term durability is non-negotiable.
What matters during installation
- Postforming: silicone around the full sink perimeter is mandatory — without it the worktop lasts 2–3 years
- Section joints: joining strip plus silicone; no gaps
- Acrylic: must be cut and bonded by a brand-certified fabricator
- Quartz: heavy — base cabinets on adjustable legs, level the run before laying
