MDF costs more than chipboard — here's why: manufacturing process, material properties, where MDF is genuinely worth it, and where you're paying for nothing.
How MDF differs from chipboard
Chipboard (particle board) is made from compressed wood chips. MDF is made from compressed wood fibre. Fibre is finer and more uniform than chips, so the board is denser, more homogeneous, and machines more cleanly.

- Requires more binder (resin) per unit volume than chipboard
- Pressed at higher pressure and temperature — more complex equipment
- MDF is typically 30–60% more expensive than chipboard at the same thickness
Where MDF is essential
- Painted door fronts (enamel): chipboard cannot be painted — the edge chips and the coating bonds poorly
- Routed door fronts: grooves, grip channels, frame profiles — MDF only
- Film fronts with routing: the film follows the profile only on MDF
- Curved and radius fronts: MDF bends under heat
Where MDF is not needed
- Cabinet carcasses: chipboard handles this perfectly, no strength difference
- Back panels: thin HDF or chipboard — MDF is overkill here
- Internal shelves: 18 mm chipboard handles the load, MDF gives no advantage
- Hidden structural elements: connectors, dividers — the material is never seen
A kitchen described as "MDF" is a marketing claim if it refers to the carcasses. MDF is only justified for door fronts. Chipboard carcasses + MDF fronts is the right combination for price-to-quality ratio.
MDF and moisture
Standard MDF is more vulnerable to moisture than moisture-resistant chipboard. For consistently damp rooms (bathroom, utility) use moisture-resistant MDF — it has a green core, like moisture-resistant chipboard.

- Moisture-resistant MDF (HMR / MR grade) — acceptable, but 20–40% more expensive
- For kitchens near the sink and hob: base units in moisture-resistant chipboard + MDF fronts with a moisture-resistant finish
