Chipboard & MDF Manufacturers in the UK: Who Actually Has a Factory Here

Kronospan in Chirk, Egger in Hexham and Barony, West Fraser (formerly Norbord) in Cowie and Inverness, MEDITE SMARTPLY in Ireland — the real UK and Ireland board manufacturers behind the brand names.

The UK board industry runs on a handful of real factories rather than dozens of competing brands — and one of the best-known names on this list disappeared entirely in 2021, absorbed into a bigger group. If you're sourcing chipboard or MDF in the UK, it helps to know exactly who makes it and where.

Plant details, employment figures and investment numbers are drawn from manufacturers' own announcements and trade press (Wood Based Panels, Furniture Production, Builders Merchants Journal). Ownership and branding can change — confirm current details with your supplier before placing a large order.

Manufacturers with UK and Ireland factories

Kronospan — Chirk, North Wales

The UK's only fully integrated wood-based panel producer — Kronospan controls the whole process on site in Chirk, from raw timber to finished board. The plant has operated since 1970 and is one of the top 10 manufacturing employers in Wales.

  • Over 650 employees, 90% of whom live within 10 miles of the site
  • Over £500 million invested in Chirk since 1970, with a further £200m+ under evaluation
  • Produces particleboard, MDF, P5 flooring board, melamine-faced board (MFC), laminate flooring, worktops and sawn timber
  • Made from a mix of recycled and UK-sourced timber

Egger UK — Hexham and Barony

Two plants: Hexham (Northumberland), open since 1984, and Barony (East Ayrshire, Scotland). Hexham is the largest manufacturing employer in Northumberland.

  • Around 650 employees at Hexham alone
  • Produces chipboard, OSB and MDF boards, plus sawn timber
  • On-site CHP biomass plant burns sawdust and MDF waste from its own recycling and production
  • One of the most technologically advanced sites in the Egger group in Europe

West Fraser (formerly Norbord) — Cowie, Inverness, South Molton

Three UK mills, all originally built under the Norbord name before the Canadian West Fraser Timber completed its acquisition of Norbord Europe in February 2021. Norbord as a brand no longer exists — the mills, staff and products carried straight over to West Fraser.

  • Cowie (Scotland): the UK's first MDF manufacturing site, also produces particleboard
  • Inverness (Scotland): the first OSB plant in Europe, and the first in Europe to gain FSC accreditation
  • South Molton (Devon): the group's English mill
  • Norbord → West Fraser rebrand in 2021 was an ownership change, not a plant closure — same sites, same staff

MEDITE SMARTPLY (Ireland)

Not a UK manufacturer, but the brand most UK merchants stock for MDF and OSB — part of Coillte, the Irish state forestry group, with two plants in Ireland: Clonmel (MEDITE, MDF) and Waterford (SMARTPLY, OSB).

  • MEDITE is one of Europe's most recognised MDF brands
  • SMARTPLY OSB is positioned as a lighter, more consistent alternative to plywood
  • Main markets: Ireland, UK, Benelux, and the US; exports to 30+ countries
  • Over 300 skilled staff across the two plants

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Norbord still a company?+

No. Canadian group West Fraser Timber completed its acquisition of Norbord Europe in February 2021, and the Norbord brand was retired. The same UK mills — Cowie, Inverness and South Molton — now operate under the West Fraser name with no change to staff or production.

Does Egger have a factory in the UK?+

Yes, two: Hexham in Northumberland (open since 1984) and Barony in East Ayrshire, Scotland. Together they produce chipboard, OSB and MDF.

Where is Kronospan's UK factory?+

Chirk, North Wales. It's the UK's only fully integrated wood-based panel producer, handling everything from raw timber to finished board on one site, and has operated since 1970.

Is MEDITE a UK brand?+

No, it's Irish — manufactured in Clonmel, Ireland by Coillte's MEDITE SMARTPLY division. It's widely stocked and used across the UK, which is why it's often mistaken for a domestic UK brand.

What matters when ordering

The difference between brands in finished furniture is minimal. A board with careful edge banding will outlast a well-known brand with sloppy assembly.

  • Ask the manufacturer: "Which board brand and mill do you use?" — the answer should be specific
  • Emission class: E1 is the standard, E2 is not suitable for living spaces
  • For kitchens and bathrooms — moisture-resistant board only (green or blue core)
  • Cabinet body thickness: 16 mm minimum, 18 mm preferred for load-bearing shelves

The board brand accounts for 20% of the result. The other 80% is edge banding quality, cutting precision, and hardware. Don't let a salesperson use a well-known name as the main justification for a higher price.

Global brands — for reference

These brands set industry benchmarks and often come up in spec comparisons, but don't have their own manufacturing site in the UK or Ireland — they reach the UK market through import and distribution.
