How to Hang a Wall Cabinet Securely

Wall cabinets fall not because of bad fixings but because of the wrong anchor for the wall type. Wall materials, fixings, and the correct installation sequence.

Why Cabinets Fall

The most common reason a wall cabinet falls is the wrong wall plug for the wall type. A plug rated for solid masonry holds far less in aerated concrete. The second most common cause is using a plug that is too small in diameter or too short.

Choosing the Right Fixing

  • Expanding nylon plug + screw: reliable in concrete and solid brick; Ø8 mm, L50–60 mm minimum for a wall cabinet
  • Chemical anchor (resin): maximum load; for aerated concrete and hollow materials under heavy loads
  • Toggle anchor (butterfly): spreads behind the plasterboard; rated 20–40 kg per point
  • Molly bolt (metal toggle): more reliable than nylon under vibration
  • For light cabinets in plasterboard (under 15 kg): screw directly into the metal stud — use a stud finder

Tools Needed

  • Hammer drill or impact drill — for concrete and brick
  • Masonry drill bit matching the plug diameter (8 or 10 mm)
  • Spirit level — 60 cm minimum, 80–100 cm preferred
  • Tape measure and pencil
  • Cable and pipe detector — essential before drilling
  • Screwdriver or drill-driver

Installation Sequence

  • 1. Mark the mounting line with a level — one horizontal line for the entire cabinet run
  • 2. Use the detector: check for cables and pipes at every drilling point
  • 3. Mark fixing points using the cabinet's hanging bracket as a template
  • 4. Drill to the correct diameter and depth (plug length + 5 mm)
  • 5. Blow out the hole — dust stops the plug from expanding properly
  • 6. Drive the plugs fully home
  • 7. Drive the screws in but leave 3–5 mm proud — enough for the cabinet bracket to hook on
  • 8. Hang the cabinet, level it, then tighten the screws fully
  • 9. Adjust the hanging brackets (if adjustable) for height and vertical alignment

Hanging System: Rail vs Individual Brackets

Most modern kitchen wall cabinets hang on a continuous rail or on individual brackets screwed into the cabinet sides.

  • Continuous rail: one horizontal track across the full cabinet run — cabinets hook on and align to it. Faster to install and level
  • Individual brackets in the side panels: each cabinet fixed at 2–4 points separately. More flexible but slower to align
  • Adjustable hangers (Blum, Hettich): allow the cabinet to be moved up, down, and in/out after hanging — no redrilling needed

A wall cabinet loaded with crockery weighs 30–60 kg. Each fixing point should be rated at least 2–3 times the actual load. Do not cut corners on the number of fixings: a minimum of 4 points for a cabinet 60–80 cm wide.

Common Mistakes

  • Wrong plug for the wall type — the most common cause of failure
  • Screw too short — it doesn't reach the base of the plug
  • Drilling without a detector — hitting a cable or pipe
  • Not blowing out the hole — plug can't expand in a dusty hole
  • Only one fixing point per cabinet — never do this, even for a light unit
  • Hanging without a level — misalignment is obvious immediately and hard to correct
